An astonishing transfer of a sublime performance. Setting new standards for 1930s piano remastering. The sound quality of the remastered Beethoven Hammerklavier recording here came as something of a surprise to me. Charisma, something which can’t be acquired through study, is difficult enough to define in the concert hall, when one can see as well as hear the performer, but how to explain it within seconds of the opening of a strictly audio recording? Richter had more charisma in his little finger than most performers acquire in a lifetime. I love Sviatoslav Richter, and I think he was an excellent Beethoven interpreter (better than Gilels, even). Melodiya presents mostly studio recordings made before Richter's first appearance in the West in 1960; the Praga set consists of live performances from Prague and its environs, more than half of which date from 1965-88.
